In the wake of last weekends tragic loss to the H5AB family, I would like to pass on the following story. This story is very sad by its own right, but it also affects another one of our H5AB family. The young girl and Mother of 2 small boys has a brother that plays baseball for Klein Oak. Any help and/or prayers you can give would be greatly appreciated.

This one hits close to home for me personally as I work with Andreas dad and consider them good friends. The following story appeared in the Chronicle Monday in Dale Robertsons column.

Bad news
Creaky knees long ago ended Steve Wedderburn's competitive tennis career, but older members of the Houston tennis community have hardly forgotten the huge shadow the personable Aussie once cast over what's now called the Gallery Furniture Houston Open a generation ago.

The hard-serving Wedderburn won the doubles title five years running with five partners.

He also advanced to the singles final four years in a row, losing to four opponents.

With the big citywide tournament going on this weekend, it's a good time to remember Wedderburn because he needs your help. His daughter, Andrea Shumate, 24, has an incurable form of cancer.

A recent 12-hour operation to remove a giant tumor in her shoulder came too late to stop the disease from spreading, so friends are organizing a fundraiser to help the family with the staggering medical bills and to provide for Andrea's two young children.

The event, sponsored by Northside Lexus, where Wedderburn is the sales manager, will be at 7:30 p.m. April 28 at the Spring Chateau at 4012 FM 2920 in Spring.

Tickets are $50 each.

There will be silent auction with lots of valuable tennis souvenirs.

Those interested in attending are asked to RSVP by Sunday at 281-355-0077.

It's also possible to donate directly to a Bank of America account (005865992581) that has been set up on Andrea's behalf.

Details will be available at randisrunforandrea.com.

Attorney Allan Boss, a former Rice player and Wedderburn's partner when they won the Australian junior doubles championship, is helping coordinate the event.

Also, Rodney Anderson, Marilyn Bearden, Bill Gaydosic or Barry Goble at Northside Lexus (281-569-3300) can provide information.
