TASO Houston Baseball Chapter awards 30 scholarships to local high school seniors
The Houston Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials and the TASO Houston Baseball Umpire Scholarship Foundation proudly announces the winners for the 2015 Baseball Umpire scholarships to local graduating seniors who played baseball as part of their high school experience. For the second consecutive year a total of 30 scholarships are being awarded from funds raised by the umpire's activities, including an annual fund-raising baseball tournament. Scholarship winners were selected from more than 40 applications, based on academic achievement, financial need, essay writing, and coach's recommendations.
This year's winners will each receive $1500 sent directly to their college of choice, as well as a commemorative plaque to record the honor. The majority of the scholarship funds are generated from a yearly tournament, held in September, at 24 various fields; the majority are high school fields. 64 Varsity and 32 Sub-Varsity teams compete for the opportunity to play in the finals. The tournament finals have recently moved from Minute Maid Park to the new Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters.
Umpires Bob Charmo, Paul Burchfield and Andy Lundy hatched the baseball scholarship idea in 1999. They felt that baseball had enriched their lives in many ways and they wanted to give something to the younger generation. The idea has grown from an initial two scholarships to this year's 30. The Houston Baseball Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials and TASO Houston Baseball Umpire Scholarship Foundation has proudly raised and awarded over $500,000 in the last 15 years. Direct donations can be made to the TASO Houston Baseball Umpire Scholarship Foundation a registered 501(C)(3) tax-deductible organization
Foundation president, Fred Benson, said that he had a wonderful time contacting this year's winners. "Usually Umpires are the center of attention when there is a big dispute. It was great to joke with the kids and their parents, while making the awards, and wishing them all the best in their future education."
This year's awards banquet will be held for the first time at Constellation Field on June 23, 2015. The Skeeters will honor all the winners in a pregame ceremony. Please come and enjoy the game and help us celebrate these outstanding individuals.
The Houston Baseball Chapter of the Texas Association of Sports Officials has over 325 active Umpires, both men and women, who officiate at more than 170 local schools.
